Emily Bell : Please request prayers for a young lady named Emily who is 5 years old. According to Margie, " My friend Nancy's grand niece is undergoing surgery at Fairfax Hospital again tomorrow. She had major surgery in Jan. & has been fighting an infection all along. She is in pretty bad shape." |
Apr 8 = We are so thankful that Emily's surgery was a success. She is still in the hospital while her lungs recuperate from the last surgery. They are hoping to go home soon. They will need to go to the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia to get an opinion about the mass in her stomach (hopefully it is scar tissue.) There is a surgeon there who has a "plan" for helping Emily get well. Again......thank you so much for your continued prayers!
Apr 5 = Emily was moved yesterday late afternoon from the PICU to her normal Ped's room. She was so tired that she slept all day and night. Emily is doing well. We still has lung issues from the surgery that we have to clear. She is on oxygen full time and we have started all her Neb treatments. We did have the test yesterday to see if she had any perforations from surgery and the test came back clear. That was really good news. |

She elected to do inpatient rehabilitation at the Sheltering Arms Rehab Facility at St. Francis Hospital Center in Chesterfield County following the surgery. She is doing quite well and getting some rest as well. My Brothers and I have had the task of caring for my Father as well as keeping tabs on Mom during this time. Dad has taken things pretty well but is anxious as are we for her to come home. Mom will be discharged from the rehab center and come home on Valentine’s Day. Shana Spiess : I would like to make a prayer request for a co-worker Paul Spiess whose wife Shana of only 32 years has suffered a stroke. She was driving home one day when all of the sudden she lost the ability to swallow so she dialed 9-11. She was taken to intensive care but they ruled it out as a possible ear infection and she was released, however she had a stroke and suffered the same way. She has been hospitalized and is currently receiving nourishment through a feeding tube until she reclaims her ability to swallow. To be only 32, and to have just had her first child and to be suffering like this is tragic. I hope for the best and have prayed for her all week, I only wish you can all pray for Shana and Paul as well. |

Megan Ryan : Megan was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the summer of 2004. That same year, doctor's replaced the majority of one of her femur's with a titanium bone, and she went through a year of chemo and learning how to walk again. She won that battle and was able to stay on grade level while being home schooled. In 2006, the cancer returned and Megan had to have her right leg amputated. Throughout her entire battle against this dreadful disease, Megan was an inspiration to the thousands of people who followed her on the Caring Bridge website. She was upbeat, smiling, and always looking for the positive, no matter what she was facing. On June 19, 2007, Megan got a standing ovation that lasted several minutes from the entire Patriot Center as she walked across the stage on her bright pink crutches to receive her high school diploma from Stone Bridge . Megan was cleared to attend VA TECH in August, but, unfortunately, the cancer returned and she was forced to return home for more treatment. After a courageous battle, the cancer has finally won. She only has a few days to live. Please say a prayer that her suffering ends soon and that her mother and brother (Darcy and Sean Ryan) find peace within. |

Fr Con Griffin SMA : My good friend and fellow priest, also from Ireland, died in Nigeria. He celebrated his 60th Birthday just two months ago. We joined the SMA seminary together in Ireland in 1967 and have been friends and brothers since then, even though our missions were always in different places. It seems he got complications from malaria and they were unable to do anything for him. A good man. A fine priest. A great Christian. He will be missed. May he rest in the joy of the Lord. On this Thanksgiving Day I give thanks to the Lord for his life and for the joy he brought to the lives of many. I know he is with the Lord that he served so faithfully. |

Griffin Shager, age 4 : One of my academy classmates was scheduled to deploy on Tuesday as commanding officer of a fighter squadron for 8 months to the Persian gulf. His son, Griffin, was diagnosed over the weekend with a tumor in his back the size of a football. He is being treated at a childrens hospital in Norfolk. Please pray for a recovery to what they believe is cancer. |
The preliminary results of a biopsy diagnosis confirmed that Griffin has a soft tissue cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. The bad news first - it's in advanced stages and there are cancer cells in the fluid near the tumor. On the good side - it doesn't appear to have entered any close organs or the bone marrow. Due to the advanced stages, it's important to start treatment quickly and aggressively. Griffin will start roughly a month long regimen of daily chemotherapy treatments tomorrow. Radiation will follow. The entire regimen will be roughly 54 weeks long. Prayers and positive energy will required from everyone to keep Griffin on the road to recovery. update 11/29/07: They are off to a good start on the long road to beating the cancer. Through the Navy, they had a wonderful opportunity to get a prayer request directly to Pope Benedict XVI for Griffin. |

Becky Parker : She is currently in intensive care recovering from a life threatening bacterial infection to her leg which occurred a couple of days ago. Becky is in her early 20's and has a "zest for life". Her parents, Rick and Susan, are very active parishioners at St. Joseph and are very appreciative of our concern and prayer support. |
The docs put drains in her leg yesterday to relieve the pressure and, because of the pressure and length of time involved (nearly 36 hours), they were not optimistic about finding live muscle tissue in there. That could’ve led to all kinds of nasty endings, but the muscles WERE alive and so the prognosis for that is good. Her vitals and blood chemistry are coming back and she was moved out of the Critical Care Unit today. The docs have been sending in the Delta Force of anti-biotics and tweaking them every time another test result comes back. The beneficial effects are starting to show. In short, she’s not out of the woods but can see the clearing. Her demeanor today was much improved. |
