"The 24-Hour Knight"

In today’s world, a man faces multiple commitments to his family, workplace, community, and Church. Every day these responsibilities seem to grow while the time to meet them dwindles. It can be daunting for today’s man to find time to volunteer.

However, consider this: If you give only 24 hours per year to the Knights of Columbus, you could have a positive impact in your community and Church. Here is an illustration of how little time it takes to be an active member in the Order:

Six hoursto support a council-sponsored Church, community, council, family, or youth project of your choice. These may include Special Olympics, Blood Drives, Columbus Day Parade, Free Throw Contest, and Father-Daughter Dance.

Four hours to attend two council business meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 8:00 PM. We try to finish by 9:15 and then enjoy some fraternalism. It’s a great way to find out what’s happening and make sure your voice is heard when important decisions are made.

Six hours for you and your family to enjoy two or three council social functions such as a Friday Night dinner or monthly breakfast at the Barn.

Four hours to volunteer at our annual KOVAR Tootsie Roll drive to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Two hours for you and your family to attend one of our Corporate Communions followed by complimentary breakfast at the Barn.

One hour to read the council Handout or visit our web site ( www.goodsams.org ).

One hour to speak with a Knights of Columbus fraternal benefits agent to ensure that your family is protected now and in the years to come.

Almost any man can fit these activities into his schedule. There are 8,760 hours in a year. By dedicating only 24 of those hours to the Knights, a man has an opportunity to become a better father, husband, and member of the community.

For more information, contact the Grand Knight, Len Grus, at (703) 300-7297.

The Columbus Day Parade
Minimize

Brother Knights and Ladies,

Thanks to everyone who helped our council to hold another successful Columbus Day Parade on October 10. It’s almost impossible to list all the names, but the Grand Knight would like to mention a few individuals and groups:

Grand Marshalls Bill Jr. and Jody Furlong (and Bill’s wife Beverly). We were especially honored to have them participate in this year’s parade, an event coordinated by their dad “Wojo” for 25 years.

Parade Chairman John Reaser, who did a fantastic job in finding 45 groups for the lineup and coordinating many details of the event

Bobby Gannon and his Cone Head crew

Steve Rogers and the kitchen staff who prepared 500 hot dogs for the after-parade festivities

Bill Cahillane and the marshals who kept traffic under control

Members of the 4th Degree who led the parade with distinction and honor

Several Knights who transported and assembled the reviewing stand

Deputies from Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department

And of course, many thanks to all the groups who marched in the parade, including the Park View High School Band. We hope to see them return next year.

Photos of this year's Columbus Day Parade are now posted in picture albums. Click here to view the photos.

Good Samaritan Council #6175 will be holding their annual Polish/American Dionner Dance on February 27, 2010 at St. Joseph Parish Hall, at 750 Peachtree Rd, Herndon, Va. As always we will be serving a traditional Polish Dinner consisting of Stuffed Cabbage, Kielbasa, Pierogies, Sauerkraut, Salad and Desert. Also included in the $60.00 per Couple admission price is beer and wine and dancing to the music of "The Joe Shelko Band". The doors will open at 7:00 PM with Dinner served at about 7:30, followed by dancing from 8:30 until 11:30.

As many of you are aware, this event is very popular within the Northern Virginia community. Many people follow the band, when they appear in the area. It should be noted that all the food is homemade, prepared, on site, by a very skilled cooking staff. All the proceeds from this event, go toward the Good Samaritan Council scholarship fund.

This year, we're looking for someone to step up and be a co-chair for this function. PGK John Thomas plans on chairing the event as long as he is able, and requested to do it, however, it would be great to have someone help with the planning and execution of this fundraiser. If you are a new member of someone wishing to get involved, this is a great opportunity to become involved in a worthwhile project.

Please note that we had to increase the price for this yoars event. With the rising prices of food and drink, it became necessare to raise the price by $5.00 per person. When you consider all you get, it's still a bargain. Tickets will go on sale thie weekend. Buy early to ensure that yiou get one, because, they go fast. Most people who attended in the past, will order theirs early, thereby limiting how many tickets will be available to new attendees.

For tickets or more information, you can either call John at 703 430-6519 or e-mail him at jathomas34@aol.com.

We pray the rosary at 7:30 and the meeting begins at 8:00. Please attend and find out what’s happening in your council in the past and current month. We try to finish by 9:15 pm and enjoy the fraternalism with our Brother Knights.

The Diocese of Arlington will hold its inaugural Men's Conference at St. Joseph Church. The conference aims to awaken in men a sincere love of Christ, and a renewed dedication to our mission as servants of Christ and brothers in the Church. There will be inspirational speakers and Mass with Bishop Loverde. The diocese anticipates attendance of 1,000 men. Our Council may assist in some of the logistics for this event.
