In today’s world, a man faces multiple commitments to his family, workplace, community, and Church. Every day these responsibilities seem to grow while the time to meet them dwindles. It can be daunting for today’s man to find time to volunteer.
However, consider this: If you give only 24 hours per year to the Knights of Columbus, you could have a positive impact in your community and Church. Here is an illustration of how little time it takes to be an active member in the Order:
Six hoursto support a council-sponsored Church, community, council, family, or youth project of your choice. These may include Special Olympics, Blood Drives, Columbus Day Parade, Free Throw Contest, and Father-Daughter Dance.
Four hours to attend two council business meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 8:00 PM. We try to finish by 9:15 and then enjoy some fraternalism. It’s a great way to find out what’s happening and make sure your voice is heard when important decisions are made.
Six hours for you and your family to enjoy two or three council social functions such as a Friday Night dinner or monthly breakfast at the Barn.
Four hours to volunteer at our annual KOVAR Tootsie Roll drive to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Two hours for you and your family to attend one of our Corporate Communions followed by complimentary breakfast at the Barn.
One hour to read the council Handout or visit our web site ( www.goodsams.org ).
One hour to speak with a Knights of Columbus fraternal benefits agent to ensure that your family is protected now and in the years to come.
Almost any man can fit these activities into his schedule. There are 8,760 hours in a year. By dedicating only 24 of those hours to the Knights, a man has an opportunity to become a better father, husband, and member of the community.

 | | | | Brother Knights and Ladies,
I want to extend our congratulations to the 3 winners of $1,000 scholarships from Good Samaritan Council:
Claire Bayles of Briar Woods High School
Julia Josephs of Bishop O’Connell High School
Sarah Rose Pinney of Stone Bridge High School
These young ladies are parishioners of St. Theresa Church. Each one has an outstanding record of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community service. They are also daughters of Good Samaritan members Scott Bayles, Greg Josephs, and Todd Pinney (this was not a prerequisite to enter the competition). Claire plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in social science secondary education. Julia has been accepted to several colleges but is undecided at this point. Sarah will attend James Madison University in a pre-professional health program.
We received 18 applications. All 3 of the parishes we serve were represented, along with 11 high schools. We appreciate the assistance of our pastors in promoting the scholarships via church bulletins.
Thanks to those who served with the Grand Knight on the selection committee: PGK Don Harris, Joe Hummell, Jose Salazar, and Bill Stewart. Also thanks to our treasurer Rob Henry, who opened the applications and verified they meet the minimum criteria. He prepared them for the committee by redacting certain personal information (names, parishes, and high schools). I think we had an excellent process for evaluating the applicants. For those who may not be aware, in recent years the council did not select the winners. We provided scholarship funds to three high schools and their staff made the decisions.
We plan to present the scholarships at The Barn on Thursday, June 17 at 7:45 PM. This will be prior to our annual Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by our Chaplain Fr. Pat Kelly. We hope you are able to join us.
Fraternally, Len Grus Grand Knight

On Sunday, Good Samaritan Council hosted 120 guests at our annual Mother's Day Breakfast. It was a busy day and it would not have been the success that it was without those that gave their time over the weekend to make it run smoothly. We had several people attending that were at the Barn for the first time. They raved about the food, the service, and how nice the place looked!
Many thanks to Kathleen Wheaton for decorating the upstairs hall! As always the hall looked great and we had several people comment on how pretty the place looked. Mother's Day wouldn't have been the same without your decorations!
Thanks to Sharon & Joe Belzile for making the chocolate covered strawberries. They were a big hit.
The following Knights & their families lended a hand at whatever needed to be done on Sunday, whether it was setup. cooking, serving, busing tables, taking photos, food running, dishwashing, etc.
GK Len Grus
PGK Steve Rogers
PGK Jay McCarthy
Herb DuVall
Steve Porter (thanks to one of our newest members for stepping up and helping out!)
Bill Stewart
Len Pulley & his son John
Sam Chowdhury
Joe Angelo
Scott Bayles
Mike Zavala
Jay & Joe pulled double duties this weekend as they were helping with our catering event Saturday night, then came back early Sunday to help with the breakfast! We need more Knights like you.
Please look for a revamped Sunday Breakfast during the next fraternal year. We tentative have plans to take the monthly breakfast on the road and rotating it amongst the 3 parishes. We would then end the breakfast schedule with the Mother's Day Breakfast next May at the Barn. Please look at the Handout, Yahoo List, & council website for more details around August/September once the breakfast plans get finalized.

The Agnew and McAllister Duo presented a special concert at The Barn on Wednesday evening, April 14. It featured a wide variety of beautiful and virtuosic music from around the globe, as featured on their debut CD 'Recital'. This Flute and Guitar Duo have been performing together for almost ten years and have given concerts in many European countries as well as North and South America. Aisling Agnew comes from Ireland and Matthew McAllister from Scotland. They included some traditional Celtic pieces in their program including the requested one, the famous 'Danny Boy'. The program which they had assembled was perfectly chosen -something old, something modern, something quite unknown, and a classic of the repertoire, all played with skill and insight by two gifted young musicians who have already made names for themselves individually and whose artistic rapport as a duo brought some-thing quite special to the music.”
We thank Fr. Pat for his efforts in arranging the free concert with his niece Aisling Agnew and Matt McAllister. It was a wonderful evening a the Barn and we appreciate their sharing of time and talents with our council.

Good Samaritan Council held their Annual Polish/ American Dinner Dance on Saturday February 27, 2010 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Hall. This years dinner/dance was attended by about 175 enthusiastic participants. Due to a number of last minute cancellations, the crowd was smaller than anticipated. However, we were able to make our goal profit for the scholarship fund. The success of any event depends on the support of a lot of people within the organization, including those from surrounding councils. This years event was no exception. As evidence, this year we had attendance of 7 couples from St. Veronicas Council, 8 couples from Holy Family Council and several from Seaton Assembly, along with a large number of our own members. There were several attendees from as far away as Woodbridge, Va.
I would like to thank all those who gave of themselves to make this a most enjoyable evening and have it go so smoothly. To all the cooks who helped prepare the food, Gary and Nancy Ball, Bob and Rose Ann Pantall, Ron Ciehoski, Bill Stewart and my wife Mary Ann, I think the food was great. Good job was done by all. To Steve Schultz, for all the behind the scenes logistical help. To Everett Barnes and Ed Linek for their help in the kitchen, they were fantastic. To our Grand Knight, Len Grus, for all his help in planning and for tending bar at the dance. The people who helped serve and stock the serving line; Lori Greenfield, my daughters Tracy and Terri and four grandchildren, Ryan, Josh, Mary and Chris (who is a member of 6175), Dan and Liam Cahill, and Bob and Barb Biller. I also want to thank Don Harris, who handled the publicity, as always, thanks for your expert assistance. I would be remiss if I didn't thank the two people who did the thankless job of collecting tickets and money at the door, Steve and Amy Rogers were able to keep the line at a minimum, getting everyone in before Father Jim said grace and we opened the serving line. As usual, great job!!! Joe Wiglarz was there to help with the set up and tearing down of the hall, along with helping in several other areas. I would be remiss if I didn't give a special thanks to My wife. Mary Ann spends many tireless hours preparing for the event by shopping for bargains, planning dates to prepare the food, baking the dessert and reminding me of everything that needs to be done. Thanks to everyone of you, you're the greatest.
This year I had a co-chair, Bernie Patchan. Bernie was there for every step of the way. It was a learning process for him I'm looking forward to his future leadership in Good Samaritan Council. I'm also looking forward to the day that I can turn this event over to him. However, for now, I'm still having fun, so he will have to wait at least another year.
As you can see, there are a lot of man hours expended to hold an event. But, the end results far outweigh the effort. To think, three graduating seniors will get $1,000. to start their college career. That's what the Knights of Columbus is about. That is what we are here for. Get involved in our fundraising efforts and your council. Attend functions and have fun doing it.

Brother Knights and Ladies,
Thanks to everyone who helped our council to hold another successful Columbus Day Parade on October 10. It’s almost impossible to list all the names, but the Grand Knight would like to mention a few individuals and groups:
Grand Marshalls Bill Jr. and Jody Furlong (and Bill’s wife Beverly). We were especially honored to have them participate in this year’s parade, an event coordinated by their dad “Wojo” for 25 years.
Parade Chairman John Reaser, who did a fantastic job in finding 45 groups for the lineup and coordinating many details of the event
Bobby Gannon and his Cone Head crew
Steve Rogers and the kitchen staff who prepared 500 hot dogs for the after-parade festivities
Bill Cahillane and the marshals who kept traffic under control
Members of the 4th Degree who led the parade with distinction and honor
Several Knights who transported and assembled the reviewing stand
Deputies from Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department
And of course, many thanks to all the groups who marched in the parade, including the Park View High School Band. We hope to see them return next year.
